About

I live in Providence where, for over 30 years, I have been devoted to knitting in all its aspects.  There is nothing related to knitting that I have not been involved with! I have been designing knitwear: sweaters of all kinds, accessories, and household items. And I am also a writer and a teacher. I also often serve as a technical editor, working on pattern formatting and sizing—challenging work, but I have learned so much! And I have enjoyed being a contributing editor to Vogue Knitting magazine.

I also garden passionately in a small urban setting—flowers and roses, and veggies and herbs. I love to work with watercolors at least once a week I try to complete a painting or a bunch of greeting cards! I also work in my family’s business, Maps for the Classroom for 3-4 hours a day.

When I was a kid, my mother taught me to knit, and I spent 10 years making garter stitch squares, turning them into doll clothes. Then, as  a young woman, I began a foray into more serious knitting knitting, inspired by Barbara Walker’s Treasuries of Knitting Patterns. Soon after I began designing for magazines and yarn companies. I always have to laugh because my first published sweater was photographed backwards on the model — an auspicious beginning!

For many years I also designed knitted fabrics for Seventh Avenue fashion industry. Many of my fabrics influenced sweaters that showed up on runways and collections. All of these activities led me to write several books about all aspects of knitwear, which you can see here.

With the help of my friends Sven and Laura Risom, of Block Island’s North Light Fibers, I started to teach my annual Knitwear Design workshops. Through these small dedicated classes, I share my knowledge of knitwear and knitted fabrics, the ins and outs of how to construct and size a pattern, and how to translate ideas into a garment. I like to think I help my students adopt a “garment-maker’s mindset”, something that even many skilled knitters lack. Now I am expanding my Knitwear Design Workshops to take place in Providence too—see my classes listed here.

I love sharing my passion for knitting, designing knitwear and everything related to knitting. Hopefully this website will allow me to share my enthusiasm for the craft of knitting. You can see links to sweater designs, my books, and read my blog posts.
